Sewin like a total freak!

quilt label

As I sit here munching cherries for lunch I contemplate yet another blog!

In this one I want to share the charities I sew for…not to blow my own horn but to say…HEY…if I can do it…anyone can!  Helping isn’t only a nice thing to do it’s lovely for the Karma!

care instructions

These are some of the labels I use (or hope to very soon) on the lovies, quilts, receiving blankets and huggables I make and send to preemie babies, newborns at risk, heart babies and Project Linus greater Twin Cities.

Heart Babies

I made these quilts for Heart Babies who are having heart surgery at the children’s hospital in Minneapolis.  THis is the hospital where my daughter Natalia went for her surgery to try to repair her heart defect, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome… Alas for Nat’ the surgery was not a success.  It is heart warming to know that the lovies I made went to babies, toddlers and young children who are undertaking truly scary steps in their lives and that my quilts gave them a warm hug from Natalia’s mom.

doodle bug 19-patch purple pinkbaby flannel stripe

The neatest thing was the little thankyou I got from one of the nurses.  :)

Project Linus Greater Twin Cities

doodle bug 2

Early spring 2009 this bright lovie went to Project Linus Greater Twin Cities for a child in need of a bright pretty quilt! :)

January’s Giving

2009 these also went to God’s Tiny Angels with the pile of Preemie Boy basinette lovies (I’m probably spelling Basinette wrong, huh)

flannel stripe

This one’s kinda unisexed… so any baby could enjoy it’s warmth.  This was the 1st and LAST time I used the signature rubber stamp I had made for the backs of the quilts… The ink I had was horrid and well…look for your self! Ugh!

girl preemie under lovie

This is a preemie GIRL basinette lovie.  I made it from left over strips from my X-mas tree skirt…well, you can imagine my X-mas tree now! :)

Now…Receiving…Blankets

Right Now at this very moment…please note date of post…I have five yes 5 large priority mail boxes waiting to be shipping to God’s Tiny Angels in West Virginia…squished full of all sort of newborn goodies, from gently worn P.J.s onsies, bibs, burp cloths to MANY receiving blankets!

I took a week off at the end of June to watch Oliver and during that time I sewed like it was going outa style.  I actually ran out of flannel…CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?  ran out!  but here are the receiving blankets I made.  Most have regular cotton on one side and flannel on the other, some are flannel on both sides.  No batting, just cloth with a seam around the edge… :)

Neonatal Position Snake

position snakeNeonatal Positioning Snake.

When the baby is placed into the isolette, this tube of fabric is curled around the infant creating an environment similar to the womb. This has a calming effect on the child, helps to eliminate heat loss, and serves as a support for tubes and monitoring device cables. Take them home when the baby ‘graduates” from the hospital. Since the item resembles a snake, I make it look like one too, and then baby has a toy when he no longer needs the comfort of the nest.

Each Snake is made to survive the many washes and dries it may have to go through with your little sweetie pie.

Made with all new materials in a non-smoking, cat free environment, the lovies have hypoallergenic innards.

This Snake has been pre-washed in Dreft and is ready to be used by your baby!

Washing instructions:  Machine wash alone on the gentle cycle, cold/cold is best.  Hang to dry or use the dryer on cool, gentle cycle.

Please no bleach.

A WONDERFUL THANKYOU!

Via: http://danettesangels.tripod.com I hope this email finds the right person. My understanding is that you work for God’s tiny angels providing blankets/afghans for babies in the NICU. The “newborn girl’ that got the special blanket you provided is my precious granddaughter, Rylan. She weighed just 2lbs 14 oz when she was born in mid November. Her twin brother, Jagen, weighed a pound more. They were exactly two months premature. Both babies got to come home shortly after Christmas and are doing well. They received the blankets about midway through their hospital stay. I cried when I saw the blankets you all provided. How many times have I been a part of the group that gives to the needy, the hungry, the homeless, etc? But that day, when I saw your blankets that had provided security and warmth and snugness to my grandchildren…my tiny grandchildren…I just have to share something with you. Your blanket sheltered Rylan, yes. But it gave my son and his wife something tangible to protect their baby, something to bring home and smile about. And when I saw the tags on the blankets (Jagen got one too, of course), I just cried. Somehow, being on the receiving end instead of the giving end touched my heart in a new way. To think that somewhere in the U.S. women had sewn a quilt that was going to help my grand babies to be warm and comforted and not so “intensive care”-looking. My heart was a little worn that day; we’d traveled from Texas to Washington. We’d kept odd hours trying to help our son and his wife keep things going. We hadn’t been allowed to see the twins. Hospital regulations about the NICU and concerns for H1N1 allowed no visitors at all. But on that day, when our kids brought the quilts home from the hospital I understood the importance of volunteer work and anonymous giving. You ministered to so many people through your gift to my family Thank you so much.

calling all quilters…

Work In Progress

all the goodies from the Downy Quilt kit http://www.quiltsforkids.org/patterns/request …definitely Boy ToyZ…need to hide this one from Oliver…think I’ll make another or the same quilt pattern using the train fabric he picked out!

Bunny hats and more in the clothes basket after their washing…these bunny hats are TOO cute! Think I’ll try to make one to fit my head!

Bought some pre-cut charm packs at the quilt shop…this one is Moda…pretty sure this will be for a girl and wonderfully bright…mind you this is the wrong side…

The dolls I try all the clothes and hats on. Let’s call them Chuck the newborn and Dianne the 3-6 month old. They sit in the living room and really disturb Jaz as they are always looking at her…too funny! They’re surrounded by more works in progress…2 charm quilts and more fleece for receiving blankets…wonder if there’s a 12 step program for what I have!

quilting / fabric addiction

The only 12 step process that would work for quilter’s or fabric addiction: 1) determine what you want to make 2) buy fabric 3) Audition fabric for the project from your stash 4) trade dull cutting blade in rotorary cutter with sharp blade 5) Buy more fabric 6) wind multiple bobbins with needed color of thread 7) cut out project 8) buy more fabric 9) begin project 10) buy more fabric 11) either complete or put away project to be completed another day 12) return to step 1. got from a friend on http://quiltingcompanions.ning.com Ruth!

Wee cute little preemie quilt.  Purchased a grab bag of assorted charms and a chunk of hot pink at Heavenly Patchwork for 3 bucks…blended them with pink baby fabric from a garage sale and WA-LA…cute and feminine! 24 X 30 inches of pink sweetness! This will be going to GTA in West Virginia in the next big box of baby goodies!

a bit of hand quilting

Fun ‘Caterwauling’ kitty panel purchased from Heavenly Quilt Shop in Waconia http://www.heavenlypatchworkquiltshop.com/index.html hand quilting around the kitties so the safety pins are there to hold it all together for the moment.  Fun 3” prairie points look nifty around the edge. Backed with a yummy light lemon on yellow sheeting.

Wicked cool jungle panel from a box of garage sale fabric (thanks Auntie Vicki)…I’m hand quilting around all the beasties so those safety pins aren’t a permanent fixture.  Just the right size for a preemie! Backed with light teal sheeting. June 25th 2010

Kiddie Middles

Been getting up at 4:45am the past few mornings to get Jim going on time (this is the last day of that massive lack of sleep) and to keep my self from falling asleep in the living room I’ve been digging through my stash in search of fun kiddy charms to sew into quick quilt middles…

I’ve made 2 boy middles

and 1 girl middle (yup that’s one lone left over boy charm in there…shhhh…I’m sure no one will notice).  All the charms are 6 inches square…I have wonderful left over border strips from other quilts to make these a nice size…and of course the ever present prairie points! These will most likely be going to God’s Tiny Angels in West Virginia when completed http://danettesangels.tripod.com

I’ve been buying baby stuff, new and gently used all late summer and fall and basically putting it all in the ‘baby’ laundry basket since I don’t have a box to load it all in yet…didn’t realize just how much I had in there till this weekend when I made the fleece lovies.  Was going to do a small load of baby stuff to pre-wash before shipping and lo and behold I have a LARGE load instead…

Um I didn’t pre-wash the photo album or the door hanger, LOL

Look at all the fun greens!  Girlie greens and boy green! even a satin and velvety lovie!

I know the little summer dress is a SUMMER dress but a long sleeved onsie under it and it would be fine for fall/winter!

speaking of onsies…here’s a pile mom found at Wal-Mart!

LOVE all the color combinations now!  not just pink and blue for wee babies anymore!

Hmmm…I think I’ll have to work on locating more boy stuff!

warm flannel

Big pile of flannel chopped up during a brief power outage due to a winter storm…winter…guess it’s about time! 11-13-2010

whim fabric

fabrics bought on a whim over the past year make for bright yummy preemie quilts!  This is one of 2 preemie sized quilts.  Both will look the same, perhaps different quilting on the 2nd one. I purchased the hot pink velvety fabric on a whim during one quilt shop purchasing adventure and the Easter looking fat quarter flannels on another.  machine pieced and quilted…this in number one of my self imposed FINISH at least one quilt per  2-3 days to use up all the flannel I cut this past weekend.  this quilt is 30 inches by 24 inches…slightly larger than regulation preemies lovies but will make a great drag along when the wee baby becomes a toddling toddler! this will go to: http://danettesangels.tripod.com

Batik beginning…have 2 slabs of batik charms started…will be adding peace fabric and a few others to eventually make a baby/toddler sized quilt…cotton so far… each charm is 5.5 inches square…a whim purchase last time I was buying flannel  11-21-10 quilt will be going to: http://danettesangels.tripod.com

Tie Dying Quilt Backs

Totally dyed this thanksgiving morning…after making the dressing and readying the bird I set to dying 4 big white sheets to use for quilt backings.  Scarlet and Teal for boy quilts, and hot pink and purple for girl quilts.  Of course when purchasing the sheets I must not have been paying attention since one of the sheets turned out to be a fitted sheet…UGH!

Shamus was nice enough to nap out of the way while I tied up the sheets using ribbon. 11-25-10

Teal

and hot pink I dyed on the stove top in the stock pot,

scarlet

and purple in the sinks…a little too much detergent added to the purple.  11-25-10

I love the brightness of the color right out of the dye bath! 11-25-10

All done and ready to be chopped up for baby lovies! 11-25-10

Flying Piggy Bib

1st of many I hope!

Found 10 bibs at Target for 11 bucks so I bought the bright set. There’s also pastels and boy brights…will be going back for those! Found the set of 7 flying pigs on the web…for free! Plan on making a set of flour sack towels for the kitchen with the flying pigs too!

embroidery fun!

I’m all outa bibs now…will have to buy more since the embroidery is way to fun!

Love the dragon and the mom tattoo the best so far! Gave one away, will contemplate selling a few and will be donating the rest… 1-1-2011
